Thirupoondhuruthi village is situated at about 3 kms from Thirukandiyur(Thanjavur district) on the southern bank of river Kudamurutti. Sri Pushpavaneswarar and Goddess Sri Soundaranaayagi have a beautiful temple here.
Any temple situated in the delta island between two rivers is called Thuruthi. Hence, this village is called Thirupoondhuruthi. Lord Indra and sage Kashyapa worshipped here. Saint Appar had offered great services at this shrine. Gnanasambandar hesitated to set foot inside this shrine out of devotion for Appar. Nandi moved aside out of Lord Siva's grace and Gnanasambandar had darshan of the Lord here!
Goddess Durga is said to have performed penance on one leg here and is very powerful. Dakshinamoorthy gives darshan with a veena, in this temple.
