Why Ashtami and Navami (Lunar) Days Are Considered as Inauspicious Days?

Why the two tithis, Ashtami (eigth tithi of waxing and waning moon cycles) and Navami (nineth tithi of waxing and waning moon cycles), are considered as inauspicious in Vedic Hindu Astrology? People believe that any task commenced during these two days will meet lot of hurdles and there will not be good progress.

Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu, was born on this tithi (day) in prison at Mathura (a temple town near Delhi, India). He has suffered a lot to establish himself. Later he became the king of Dwaraka. He has achieved the purpose of his incarnation by winning or killing the demons (Asuras).

Lord Rama

Lord Rama, the nineth incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu, was born on this tithi (day) at Ayodhya. His father King Dasaratha loved his eldest son Rama. However when he was about to ascend his throne, he was directed to spend 14 years in forest. He left for forest for observing penance and he was accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. There Lord Rama met innumerable sufferings. Finally he has achieved the purpose of his incarnation by winning or killing Ravana, the King of Lanka.

'Durgaashtami' and Durganavami'

During Navaratri celebrations Goddess Durga is worshiped on Ashtami and Navami and hence these two days are called as 'Durgaashtami' and Durganavami'

Why Inauspicious?

Therefore the Hindu Vedic Astrology discourages the important functions like marriage, upanayanam, ear boring ceremony, seemandham, grihapravesham (house warming ceremony), registration of properties etc. Some other says that that these two days are preserved to worship Lord Rama and Lord Krishna.

Recommended for Certain Functions

However the two tithis are suitable for religious functions like poojas, homams, yagams, bajans, upanyasams, group chanting of Mantras, initiations like guru dikshas, yoga etc. The Hindu rulers found that Ashtami and Navami tithis were found most auspicious to wage a war against their rivals. Even you can seek for justice in the court of law and file a court case on this day.
