Chrome to Ditch Support for XP, Other Aging OSes

Google Chrome will end support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and older versions of Mac OS X in the spring.

Since Microsoft and Apple no longer support the aging operating systems, neither will Google Chrome, which ends browser updates and security fixes in April 2016. After that, continue using the platforms—which include OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8—at your own risk.

"If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features," Marc Pawliger, director of engineering, wrote in a blog post.

Earlier this year, Google announced extended support for Chrome on XP through the end of the year, in an effort to keep users safe from browser-based vulnerabilities.

"At that time, we strongly encouraged users on older, unsupported platforms such as Windows XP to update to a supported, secure operating system," Pawliger said this week. "Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware."

Also getting the cold shoulder from top tech companies? Plugins. Chrome is pausing non-essential Flash content, Microsoft Edge has given plugins the cold shoulder entirely, and Mozilla plans to cut ties by the end of next year.
