Sri Adhi Kumbeswarar temple. Kumbakonam

This is a massive and most important temple in the heart of Kumbakonam town. Roughly 4 acres in area and decorated with a nine level Rajagopuram(main entrance tower), the temple is in all grandeur. The presiding deity's name is Adhi Kumbeswarar. The Siva who is the very reason for the name of the town, Kumbakonam! He is the star of the most important festival(that happens once in 12 years) associated with Kumbakonam, the Mahaamaham festival!

During creation times, the pot of nectar came floating in the Pralaya waters. Lord Siva assumed form of Kiraathaka(violent one) and made the pot fall. It fell at this very temple.

The Siva linga is made of sand, hence no abhishekam. The Siva lingam has a shining gold covered ornament. Goddess is Sri Mangalaambikai. Gnanasambandar and Appar have sung divine hymns here. Arunagiri naathar has sung praises of Murugan in this temple.

The superior temple that bestows all wisdom and fortunes on the devotee.
