Vallam is at about 7 kms from Thanjavur. Egowri Amman has a shrine on the outskirts of this village. This temple is one of the significant Amman temples of Thanjavur.
The demonic being, Thanjasuran asked Lord Siva for a boon, that he could be killed only by a woman. Lord Siva thought how insulting to woman but granted the boon. The celestial beings and rishis suffered due to Thanjasuran's wrath. Siva conveyed this to His consort Uma and she assumed the form of Mahashakthi Gowri and vanquished him. The land where Thanjasuran was slain, came to be known as Thanjavur.
Karikaala Cholan and many Chola rulers are said to have worshipped here before battles and emerged victorious.
