The deities in this temple are called Shri Pragathambal and Shri Kokarneshwarar. The name of this temple is derived from its location, Thiru Kokarnam in Pudhukkottai district. Another major reason for the popularity of this temple is because it is a "Kudaivarai" Temple. 'Varai' means hill and 'Kudai' is to tunnel through. The temple is an excellent example of the architectural capabilities of the ancient man in tunnelling through a hill to build this temple.
Goddess Shri Pragathambal is also known as Araikkaasu Amman. Lord Subramani (AKA Lord Murugan) is present here with his two wives; Valli and Deivanai. Ideal offering is a garland of Nerium flowers. It is believed that this lord grants victory in legal disputes over land and assets.
